Rooted in a love for creativity and community, Happy Medium, an art studio with two locations in New York was born from a desire to unplug and return to hands-on joy. Meet its co-founder, Tayler Carraway who decided to start this art studio with her husband to make a space for others to unplug and feel inspired too.
Happy Medium was the kind of place my husband and I dreamed about but didn’t exist. I was working in eCommerce, and he was at a tech startup and we were both constantly online. We wanted to get offline and make things with our hands again, like we had when we were kids. We turned our living room into an art studio with the thought that if our materials were out that we would make things more and we were right! We spent a lot of time in the studio and soon friends asked to come over. We started hosting these Art Parties at home which was kind of like a prototype of the Art Cafe. Eventual strangers were DMing asking to come and that’s when we knew that we had a real concept on our hands.
It’s like a creative gym for casual artists – a place with art classes, experiences, and supplies for adults to practice their creativity again.
Every day that I get to do this is such a blessing and its own milestone – we were such unlikely founders with such a crazy idea that I still can’t believe I get to do this for a living every day. It’s not always glamorous, in fact most days aren’t, but I’m still very proud of our team, our business, and the incredible customers we’re honored to serve every day.
Gosh so many – the older I get, the more I appreciate the women and sororal bonds in my life. My former boss Nell Diamond of Hill House taught me so much about running a business and resilience. Ray Eames for how to be a badass in your chosen field, Kim Kardashian for how to build an empire, Sara Blakley for maintaining a strong connection to the universe, Ty Haney how to get back up again, and Trinity Mouzon Wofford for being such a beautiful example of how to find harmony in your life.
Evolving! After working for (and wearing) fashion brands for almost a decade, I’m just now getting to explore my own personal style. I’m constantly looking for playful, wearable, and high-quality pieces to add to my wardrobe – something that can take me from work lunch to the pottery wheel while still feeling confident. I try to avoid activewear unless I’m going to work out – it’s easy to get stuck in a rut of leggings when you’re in the studio everyday but I find that I have more energy and am more creative when my outfit is cute! It’s the simple things!
Getting ready for the day! Take a shower, put on some make up, and pick out a cute outfit. It’s cliché but I really do feel so much better on the inside when I feel like I look good on the outside.
Green – the color of money, luck, and new growth.
