Samantha Barry, Editor-in-Chief of Glamour Magazine, chats with us about her career highlights, what keeps her motivated, and how she combats self-doubt.
What has been the proudest moment for you in your career?
Every year when we put together Glamour’s Women of the Year I feel immensely proud to be at the helm of this title. I love a big reveal, a big event, a big moment, whether that is a cover at Glamour, during elections at CNN, or covering a major news story at BBC before that.
How would you describe your personal style?
Structured fun. I love great tailoring with an unexpected moment of joy (feathers, colors, double denim). Kelly Kapowski meets Melanie Griffith in Working Girl.
You’ve mentioned that Irish women in particular, "can be too prone to self-deprecation.” What motivates you when you are doubting yourself?
I say nice things to myself. It sounds silly, but you are the first line of defense on how you feel about yourself. Look in the mirror, give yourself a pep talk and say things out loud to yourself that you would say to friends who need a boost.
Who are the women that inspire you?
I meet so many women every day, in work, in friendships, in family. I am constantly impressed and overwhelmed by the amazing women of the world.
If you were a color, what color would you be and why?
Red. I love a strong power red moment. It is feminine with a side of fire.
Your first issue at Glamour focused on the complex relationship that women have with money. What is one piece of advice you would give to young women when it comes to financial literacy?
Have a group of female friends that you can have honest financial conversations with – where you are with money, where you want to go – your money dreams and challenges.
For work or personal, what has been your favorite place you’ve traveled to recently?
I went to Cape Town for a story for Glamour with Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda Gates. I fell instantly in love with the people, the food, the wine, and the penguin beach. I want to go back and explore more of South Africa.
