Meet Molly Ford, the creative force behind Flowers by Ford. Her thoughtfully curated floral arrangements have become staples for many throughout New York City. Whether she's sourcing blooms at sunrise or transforming spaces through florals, Molly approaches her work with an intuitive eye for color, texture, and storytelling. We caught up with her to talk about creative rituals, getting dressed for work, finding inspiration, and the blooms she's loving most right now.
My parents are artists, so I grew up surrounded by color and inspiration. I also spent a lot of time in nature. Floral design felt incredibly natural to me when I started working at a flower shop as an intern over ten years ago. It’s been a life-changing experience; I found my passion and am honored to make a living doing what I love.
Anything comfortable that doesn’t get in the way of making an arrangement! I love a button-down and jeans, as it feels both elevated and comfortable.
A perfect summer evening in our backyard with food, drinks, and friends! I also love being able to celebrate milestones. We have hosted baby showers, birthday parties, promotions, engagements, and anniversaries.
There are too many good ones to choose from, but if I had to name a few: foxgloves, sunflowers, sweet peas, cosmos, and garden roses. I find myself loving something new each season, though, and I look forward to being reminded of them every year.
There are so many great spots, but my go-to is G. Page—they always have a wonderful variety of flowers, and the staff is so lovely and helpful!
I always start with color and texture. I love to pull flowers together at the market and see how they sit next to one another. Then, I make my arrangements in chicken-wire vases to give them structural support. After that, I follow my heart. I will sometimes create with a clear vision of the end result, but most of the time, I just let it flow. I love watching these arrangements come together!
Go into floral conversations with a budget in mind—this will help streamline communication so you can focus on your other vendors. Also, just do what you can! This industry is full of amazing vendors and options, so don't overextend yourself or your budget. The most important thing to remember is the joy of your people gathering around to celebrate your love. It’s a beautiful process worth enjoying!
New York is full of opportunities and people; it has completely changed my life and career. I don't think I would be who I am today without making this move over seven years ago. Every day is different because of the unique creative projects people want to collaborate on. I am constantly overwhelmed with inspiration, which serves as a good reminder to slow down and appreciate what we've already built, versus always running to the next thing.
I feel inspired by these florists: Fox Fodder Farm, Isa Isa Floral, Jenn Chez Design, Field Studies Flora
And these creators: Sophia Roe, The Turmeric Times, Sissi Pohle, From Lucie NYC
I love strong, determined women. There is something so powerful about a confident woman who can create beauty in the world, no matter her surroundings.
Yellow! I love to think of my life as something beautiful and bright. I want it to shine with peace, joy, and love.
