Dr. Ashley Brissette

One of New York's leading Ophthalmologists Ashley Brissette takes us through her day in the life being an eye surgeon, and shares how she stays true to herself with her fashion choices outside of scrubs post baby.

Tell us a bit about your skincare line Daily Practice! What inspired you as an ophthalmologist to start the brand?

This all started because my patients kept asking me for product recommendations! They frequently asked me for advice on what to use around the eye area to improve both the appearance and feel of their eyes. I realized there was a gap in the market for eye-focused skin care. With all the misinformation and rising eye sensitivities, it became clear that we need products that meet high standards of care.

I wanted to create a line that not only fills that need but also reinforces the idea that eye care should be a part of your daily practice- as routine as skincare, hair care, or exercise. And, of course, I wanted these products to be ones that people enjoy using every day, while also looking great on their bathroom shelf.

What has been the proudest moment for you in your career?

Honestly, the greatest joy in my career gets to come everyday when patients tell me they can see again. There’s no greater feeling than doing surgery and restoring vision, and I feel incredibly lucky to be an ophthalmologist and to be able to make such a difference in people’s lives every single day. It’s really the best job in the world.

What is one thing we should be doing to take care of our eyes?

Washing your eyelids and lashes every day. So the function of the eyelids and lashes is to trap all the dust, pollution, pollen and bacteria in our environments and prevent it from getting into the eyes. But if you don't wash it off, all that debris leads to redness and irritation. So using an eyelid formulated cleanser that will remove all those irritants yet keep the eyelid skin and eyes hydrated is key. Also getting regular eye exams is essential! We can tell a lot about your total body health just by looking at your eyes.

Who are the women that inspire you?

The women that paved the way in medicine and the other STEM fields. Being a woman in science, I love how we’re challenging the notion that intelligence and passion for beauty or fashion are mutually exclusive. To me, being smart is incredibly sexy, and you can love science, fashion, and anything else you’re passionate about all at the same time.

What motivates you when you need an extra push?

Remembering that motivation wanes and that’s why we need discipline. And hoping to make my son proud!

What did you learn during the process of creating your own company and brand, and what advice would you give to others looking to do the same?

Delegate when possible! I always say ‘you can do it all, you just can’t do it all at the same time’ - so find those people that can help you along the way and learn to delegate to others when appropriate. Keep the things for yourself that you enjoy doing and offload the rest.

How would you describe your personal style?

Minimalist, and evolving. I’m still trying to find my new style post baby. And because I wear scrubs most days to work I sometimes find it hard to put together an outfit. I’m trying to build a wardrobe that feels timeless and professional. Although I do have a section of my closet that is full of color, prints and sequins that I love to wear when not at the hospital. I have a little more fashion personality outside of work.

If you were a color, what color would you be and why?

Navy blue - It’s a color that feels confident without being too bold. It has a depth that’s calming yet focused - much like how I try to approach things.
