Meet Amy Batista, co-founder of Ceremonia Bakeshop, the beloved Williamsburg bakery where family, culture, and community come together through food. What began as a shared dream with her husband, Martty, has grown into a neighborhood favorite known for its nostalgic pastries, thoughtful flavors, and welcoming spirit. We caught up with Amy to talk about the story behind Ceremonia, the inspiration she finds in her community, and getting dressed for days spent in the bakery.
How did you know you wanted to open a Bakeshop? Have you always been a baker?
Opening a bakeshop was always a dream of mine, but I never thought it was something that would actually be possible. I’ve always loved baking and was doing most of my baking just for fun at home. Eventually, it grew into something much bigger, and somehow that dream became Ceremonia. I’m still amazed that something I once thought was impossible is now my everyday life.
What does a typical day at Ceremonia Bakeshop look like?
These days, “typical” looks a little different because I recently had my fourth baby! I’m definitely in an era of learning how to balance it all. Before the baby, I would do a little bit of everything-morning baking, recipe development, social media, administrative work, and helping wherever I was needed.
So these days, if I'm at the bakery, there will be a baby with me- whether I'm recipe testing, talking with staff or customers, sitting in a business meeting, or catching up on administrative work.
Is there a pastry or dish on the menu that feels especially personal to you?
This one is really hard because almost every item feels personal to me, and I truly mean that. But if I had to choose one, it would be our sea salt chocolate chip cookie. My sister and I spent years developing that recipe together. It’s definitely more than just a cookie to me.
What are you wearing to the bakery?
I wish I could say I’m dressing up every day, but if I’m baking, cooking, or developing recipes, it’s definitely something comfortable with some kitchen shoes and an apron!
When you have a sweet tooth, what bakery item are you reaching for?
Our sea salt chocolate chip cookie. Always.
Who are the women that inspire you?
I am surrounded by inspiring women throughout my life. I've learned so much from each of them. My mom and my sister inspire me every single day.
My mom cooked and baked a lot growing up and I was so lucky to be eating all of it. I don't think I realized at the time how much she was inspiring me but looking back, I can see how much of that shaped my love of food and baking. She's also an incredible mom, and now that I have kids of my own, I understand her sacrifices in a whole new way.
My sister is a Pastry Chef. She inspires me daily. I love being able to talk to her about ideas and recipes. She is incredibly smart, supportive and someone I can always turn to creatively.
What is your favorite part of running a small, family-owned business?
My favorite part is all of it. I honestly have no words for how lucky I feel to be able to own and operate a bakery with my husband. Getting to build something together, work alongside each other every day, and watch our kids grow up with the bakery is incredibly special. They’re getting to make so many memories here, and I know those are memories we’ll all carry with us forever. It can be chaotic, busy and definitely not always easy- but I wouldn’t trade it.
What does a perfect morning at Ceremonia look like for you?
After dropping the kids off at school, I’d love to have a quiet moment with my husband in the bakery, enjoying a really good coffee and a pastry together before putting on my apron and getting to work. There’s something so special about having that little moment together before the day gets busy.
If you were a color, what color would you be and why?
Brown. It feels warm, comforting, grounded, and familiar. It’s the color of everything I love: coffee, chocolate chip cookies & baked goods.
